Huge Vietnam flag, made of pottery, created on Truong Sa
A national flag made from pieces of pottery was inaugurated on the
Truong Sa (Spratly) Island District in Khanh Hoa Province yesterday
(June 6).
The unique flag is located on the top of the hill on Truong Sa Lon Island, part of the Truong Sa archipelago in the East Sea.
The largest of its kind in Vietnam, the flag has been created from about 310,000 pieces of pottery, weighs 3.5 tons, and measures 25 meters in length and 12.4 meters in width, said Nguyen Van Thang, chairman of the district People’s Council. “The flag of Vietnam, which has a red background with a five-pointed yellow star in the center, will be seen clearly from planes or satellites from high above. It acts as self-identification and introduction to everyone that, ‘Here is Vietnam’,” Thang said at the inaugural ceremony. The pottery used for the massive art project was at the Bat Trang Pottery Village, a traditional porcelain and pottery village with a history of seven centuries in Hanoi. The construction of the artwork was funded by the Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank (VP Bank). The flag was made based on the idea of painter Nguyen Thu Thuy, the author of the “Ceramic Road”, another large fine artwork along the Hong River in Hanoi. The Vietnam Record Books has recognized the flag as the largest national flag made of pottery in Vietnam so far.
